How can I make my wireless network secure?

  tolly2 23:08 05 Jan 2005

just about to set up my first wireless network at home.

PC in lounge, lap top to be used in other rooms.
Both are running Win XP.

I have a d-link DI524 router, and a ntl cable modem. Also d-link pc card for the lap top.

Problem is - how can I make it all secure so that no one can gain access to any of my information, or use my connection to the internet?

Thanks in advance folks.

The reality is that if someone is determined to "break in" you can't. What you can do is take a few simple steps that will make it difficult for anyone.

1. Turn off broadcasting of SSID

2. Enable WEP encryption - just makesure you use the same key on both machines

3. Allow only the MAC addresses of your own cards to connect.

None of these are totally foolproof, even MAC addresses can be spoofed, but it would take someone with some specialised kit, a lot of knowhow and total determination to overcome them.
