Hourglass cursor permanent - no keyboard response

Attempts to cure neglected and potentially infected laptop Toshiba Satellite 2400-103 resulted in a standstill.

Final result after switchin-on: Windows XP alive and apparently ready. Any attempt to click on any desktop icon or even 'start' (to do regulation switch-off) results in cursor changing into hourglass and staying as that permanently. Nothing more can be done. Light indicating HD working long time ago extinguished, hours pass - nothing happens.

Previous operation leading to that result:
- Installation of Registry Mechanic and deleting about 400 wrong items;
- Installation of avast! antivirus.

Alas old AV - something called in German 'antivirenkit' - was not uninstalled before introducing avast! Could this be the cause? - or deletion of 'wrong' item which was not wrong?

How get it working - to access system's remedies as 'restore' or do whatever else? As now it sits there showing need for time and doing nothing!

There must be a simple answer to that. Please!
