host PC on new wired network has slowed to a crawl

Thanks to help from this forum, I have now networked our 2 household PCs together - both run XP & are 2.8ghz, 160gb hdd with 512mb of ram. Network cards are internal and the 2 are connected by 30m of crossover Cat6 cable. Just prior to connecting, I defragged the host Pc for good measure. Now the host seems to run really slowly, even when not on the web & with the client PC turned off, it gets its little torch out & goes looking around 'My computer', then if minimising a program it leaves that white space where the program was, whilst the graphics card catches up - it seems nearly as slow as the 12 yr old PC we threw out! I seem to remember seeing somewhere that you can 'tell'the host PC its running a network, other than in the setup wizard. Is this correct.Any other ideas to get it back to its former speediness?
