Hibernation problems

My daughter runs a Dell laptop with Windows XP. When she tells it to hibernate it gives the message Preparing to Hibernate and then freezes. She has to remove the battery before it will restart. Any thoughts?

I take it all windows updates are installed and any Options for VGA Driver need to be updated.

On the Dell Laptop their will be a Service Tag No. can you post back with this please and also the Dell Laptop model number, maybe you have a Inspirion ?

Also run a full virus scan.

Yes everything is up to date. You are right, it is an Inspirion 1300. Service tag number 7ZWRF2J. Ran a virus scan 2 days ago. Nothing found

Do you have any USB peripherals (such as a mouse)attached to the laptop which are set to bring it out of standby?

Just before a PC/laptop goes from standby to hibernate it momentarily fires up again and all peripherals become active for a short space of time.

It's possible that if have any USB devices set to bring the laptop out of standby, by firing them up again they're interrupting/preventing the hibernation process.

Happens whether the mouse is attached or not.

A couple of suggestions via Google click here= suggest that the graphics driver might be the problem and making sure that it is the latest version would be a good idea.

Still no luck. Anything else?

Has she/you updated any graphics drivers recently? If so try rolling back to the previous drivers using Device Manager.

No change to graphics drivers recently.
