HELP No Security

  albertwok 12:06 26 Sep 2008

Yesterday I downloaded IE8 Beta (tinkering again like an idiot)
after that I just got a blank window for my McAfee security
So I did a restore got the security back then decided to
get rid of IE8. I stupidly did not look properly in the
add /remove programme list and proceeded to delete
some files from the PROGRAMME FILES FOLDER.
that had ie8 on them. Then I tried to download IE7
again I get a message say thank you for downloading IE7 but it does not seem to install on my computer.
Then I start to do some more restores and seem to get into
a bigger mess.I gave up at 3.45am this morning.
I started trying again about 9.00a today now I
have no antivirus cannot download anything properly.
The Sysem restore does not work just get a blank
I still have BT Yahoo browser but cannot get any
Internet Options on that.
Is there anyone who might have some advice
for me please.I will then promise never to tinker

Once a tinkerer always a tinkerer.

Repair XP

OPTION 1 - Repair XP by replacing corrupt files

sfc /scannow

in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer. This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.

OPTION 2 - Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Hi Fruit Bat
As you sugested I ran sfc/scannow
and kept getting requests for Windows XP professional Service Pack 3 cd , as I have not got one I had to keep pressing cancel till it ended.
After restarting I got the message,
dsca.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Servce.
Application has generated an exeption that could not be handled.
Process id=0xb2c(2860),thread id=0xb30(2864)

I have read the Scannow SFC article and to me its getting a bit complicated.
If I dont have CD what do you suggest I could do
to get one.

Just letting you Know I sorted the problem by saving all my files to cd`s then returning computer to base. Drastic I know but because I did not have a back up Boot CD thats all I could think of to do.
Its taken a couple of days to get all updates downloaded and everything is okay now.
Thanks for advice Fruit Bat.
I will not tinker again.
