Help needed with tower problem

  ischia 18:52 22 Aug 2013

Two of the ports on my Dell tower (which is 9 years old) won't let me plug in keyboard or mouse. Can it be repaired and if so is it costly?

Many thanks for any assistance.

If they are the ps2 ports then you would need a new motherboard.

The cheaper alternative is to use usb keyboard and mouse or you can buy ps2 to usb adapters to plug your old keyboard and mouse into the system.

Hope this helps.

USB? front or back?

Check in device manager for any exclamation marks against the USB equipment

Uninstall and reinstall the USB hubs.

"won't let me plug in keyboard or mouse" if they are ps2 keyboard and mouse and you mean you can't physically plug them in, you have to be very careful to line them up properly, another problem is the pins might be bent so you will have to use a very small pair of pliers to straighten up any bent pins.

I think we are not allowed to give direct links but if you click here search through here. You should find what you want for a couple of pounds. Make sure you pick the right connection i.e. usb is male.

A usb keyboard and mouse combination can be as low as £5.
