The problem is most likely to be due to a poor signal or interference. Try changing the channel number used in the network, which is probably using the default setting of "!!". Set it to, say, 8 or 6 and see if that improves reliability.
Using a fixed IP address might also be beneficial if the adapter is continually losing its IP address. Make sure there are no mobile/cordless phones near either the router or the laptop as these do cause interference.
