Help with chipsets

Hi Im looking at parts online and I keep coming across the word chipsets and I am not to sure what they are and what they do please help

I presume the parts you are talking about are motherboards is that right?

Is a chipset a diffrent thing from a motherboard then

The chipset is integrated into the motherboard.

It is in effect (and this is a very basic analogy)the brains on the motherboard that talks to the CPU and tells everything on the motherboard what to do.

So I wouldn't need to buy one seperatly I think I got confused because the Intel site advertises them as to diffrent products.
