I have a laptop computer that has been infected with the (virus response lab 2009) trojan since I dont seem able to remove the virus I decided to format the hard drive and re install xp the problem is that the virus seems to have disabled the optical drive which means I cant install using the xp cd I have also tried using an external disc drive and this also is not recognised any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

Try starting in safe mode,then run your virus software.

Enter the BIOS and set the first boot device to CD drive, save and exit (F10)

Try booting with the XP CD in the drive and see if you get the message "Press Any Key to boot from CD"

There shouldn't be any need to reinstall Windows just because you have a virus.
