HDD drive constantly on, no real CPU usage showing

I have a fairly old PC that has given good service, was originally Vista OS but now runs Win 7. I Haven't had any real problems until two days ago when the HDD busy light is on constantly. When it comes to loading up games or anything that takes a bit more CPU usage it starts to hand. I have checked task manger, an there are no real processes running there, it some times goes up to 4% and the drops. I have rebooted, run updates and cleared temp internet files and cookies. Can anybody give any diagnostics or suggestions I can use please!

Try a memory check may be using the drive as virtual memory instead.
