Having trouble scanning with control panel

I can't scan from the control panel on the printer/scanner Epson xp-324 using a USB cable, I use a Mac & I can only scan using the Epson scanner software on my computer. The error I get is 'Communication error. Check the connection.'Can someone help me

On my printer I've gone into Setup>Restore Default Settings>All Settings. Once the Settings have been restored I go back to Scan>To Computer (PDF), now I get a different message saying Connecting...Wait & try again, still nothing happens
