Has my friend a virus?

She runs Windows 98 and has MacAffey Firewall and has been getting a message saying a file named C:\Windows\nirx.exe is trying to access the Internet.

She downloaded an update from an email from Microsoft a few days ago. Would this be genuine or is this what caused the trouble.

Any help would be appreciated

Microsoft never send updates via e-mail...this looks more like a virus by the sounds of it. Never accept any updates from e-mails claiming to be Microsoft.

Most big sites rarely, if at all recommend security updates via e-mail, for obvious reasons like this one.

Always go directly to the site and do it that way.

does she not have virus software installed

Bill doesn't send emails uninvited. It's a virus. If she can get online go to Housecall (disable MacAffey) and do scan there: click here

Or use Stinger to find and remove Swen click here

Also get free Anti Virus from click here

If you do the worm will spread!!!

Use Stinger to scan. Download and run it.

It sounds like a virus as Microsoft NEVER send out updates to individuals, this is a well known way for "nasty people" to get a virus on your system. I suggest your friend updates her AV software and carries out a full system scan.

Could be a dialler trying to access the web. do as suggested above and also download Ad-aware, it will remove most unwanted spy-ware. click here

More to the point has your friend got an anti virus programme. If not, suggest they go to click here and download the free AVG anti virus and install it now.

You're right Jester2K II. I read too fast to see it was a firewall and not av.

Thanks for all your help - she runs AVG Anti virus and McAfee Firewall but AVG have found nothing - only McAfee - will try Stinger
