Has hotmail account been hacked?

  Number six 22:11 19 Feb 2010

My brother has a problem with his hotmail account. Yesterday, everyone in his address book received an email, supposedly from him, directing the recipients to nasty sites selling pornography. Has someone hacked into his computer? How have they accessed his contacts list? Any help gratefully received.

His hotmail password has been compromised. Tell him to change it to a strong password immediately.

Hi and thanks for quick replies. I think he has already changed his password. Two more questions: are there likely to be any malware infections present, and is it possible any security aspects of his pc have been compromised? I believe he does a fair bit of online shopping, and he is worried about bank details etc.

I suggest you run all his security programs in safe mode. Delete all found. Reboot then download, update two programs;
SAS; free version click here

Malwarebytes; free version click here

Ask him to change the password after running full scans of each.

Had the same thing happen to me no virus or malware found.

OK Will pass on all your advise. I would still like to know how this is done, whether it indicates a weakness in his anti virus or firewall, and whether they can get beyond the email account into any other areas of his pc.

Once run full scans, as advised, then the hacker has possibly intruded on the server and not your PC.
As advised run your normal security suit (paid for presumably) in safe mode, run the othr scans (as suggested) in normal mode (bootup) then change your password. Fri, 19/02/[email protected]:53

Thanks rdave13 that is reassuring. Seems to be a common problem with hotmail. Also grateful to all who responded.

Not just Hotmail as other webmail have the same attacks.
