Whats the differnce between an ATA133 and a ATA100 Hard drive. What does the ATA refer to?

The difference is 33 ;-))

Meaning the 133 is faster than the 100 drive.

I can give a practical example. I have 2 identical Maxtor ATA 133 7,200 drives in my system. One is fitted to an ATA 100 channel and the other to an ATA 133 channel. The one on the ATA 133 channel is about 10% faster on reading but virtually the same on writing.
