Hard drives for RAID

  jg1990 16:47 09 Jul 2005

Hi everyone.

Currently in my system I have two HD's: 20Gb and 10Gb.

I'm thinking of buying a PCI raid card, but am not sure whether the hard drives will be compatible.

So, can RAID 1 (mirroring) work with two hard drives that are of different cpacity and different brands?

Many Thanks, James

Hi, the OS will be Windows Server 2003 Standard, and the computer is made by Compaq, it is about 3/4 years old.

I do not think you will gain a lot from a raid 1 setup as the discs are small and presumably very slow by the current standards as well as not being of the same size, however I am no expert and others with more knowledge of this subject may be more helpful.

it will take small size for Raid 1 (mirror), so you end up with 10GB.

I suggest you to get 4x 80Gb and to configure it as Raid 0+1 and you have fast 160GB for the server.
