Hard drive/Laptop

I bought a second hand laptop and a week later it wouldn't run.
I took it back to the shop, as it is still under warranty, and they said "It's the hard drive and a new one will have to be fitted".
I asked if the information on the broken hard drive could be retrieved and was told that it may be possible.
I have complete faith with the shop but I would like to understand what happens when a drive goes down and what happens to the contents of the drive and can it always be retrieved, to be transferred onto the new drive.
If the answer is long and involved, perhaps a site could be recommended so as I can learn at leisure.
Thank you.

If the hard drive has 'gone' I would have thought that it would not be 'economically viable' to try to retrieve the data.

Sorry to sound so negative but this may be another case of 'if you don't want to lose it, back it up'
