hard drive filling up

laptop running vista 2 meg ram 2times60gig hard drives
keeps slowing down due to hard drive filling up
only way to release space is to run a defrag every other day
example c drive shows 15 gig free space but if i leave pc on with no programmes running and return after a few hours there will be only 5gig free
can not find where the space goes or what is taking up the space as should be at least 20gig free
would be gratfull for any advice

A defrag does not free up disc space

the prog in the link will tell you exactly whats where.
your issue could be viral, you could have some sort of open ended file continuously writing to your HDD i would scan your PC with whatever you have.

download and run this if you do not already have it...

You could reduce and set to a maximum size the space system restore reserves for itself, normally 15% of a hard drive of 60GB, that would be 9GB set aside for system restore, you could probably use the elevated command prompt in Vista and maximise to about 3GB, or less

vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=3GB

Don't know what size your Recycle Bin is set at, maybe you could reduce that

Maybe this explains better how to resize Vista allocated space for system restore
