Hard Drive Error

This morning, when I tried to access my 2nd hard drive which I use to back up my data I was met by the following error "D:\ is not accessible The disc structure is corrupted and unreadable". Does this mean that I have lost everything? (about 35GB of invaluable data etc.). Is there any way I can retrieve this via recovery software etc? TIA

Have you tried a defragment recently?

My OS is XP Home. System restore has no effect, and the drive did not need fragmenting 2 days ago. Now disc defrag does not see the drive.

In My Computer right click on the drive and select Properties, Switch to the Tools tab and in the Error checking box click on 'Check Now'.
