Hard Disk problem

Can anyone help? I have an AMD Athlon 1800XP running Windows XP. When I tried to boot up earlier today the initial set up - floppy, cdrw, dvd check was okay. The orange light for the HD on the front of the unit remains lit for about one second then goes out.

The set up process for the OS does not run and I receive the message: Trap 0000000D=======General Protection Fault============
followed by lots of numbers and letters.

Is this a HD failure? And will it need replacing? Or can I enter the system and rescue the files?

I only have an XP rescue disk provided by the manufacturer.

Press the "TAB" key on startup and check that the POST passes the memory test.

It might be the RAM which is damaged physcally.

If you pop that XP rescue disk in (i assume it a Windows XP CD). Set the computer to BOOT from the CD and you could try a repair of XP. Your files will remain intact. Windows files maybe repaired.
