Hard disk full and a/v software won't update

  dms_05 22:19 13 Apr 2010

My son runs Vista HP edition on a Toshiba laptop. He reports a problem that his hard disk is now reporting 'full' but shouldn't be and he can't update his AVG anti-virus software. It sounds like a virus or maybe malware but how's best to proceed considering the apparent inability to update the AVG? Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated

He could try doing it in Safe Mode.

Suggest you run Ccleaner and Malwarebytes.
Which version of AVG have you got ?

As also already suggested CCleaner and Malware Bytes will clear out Temp files and unwanted clutter.
It is surprising what builds up especially if surfing and saving pages.
Then check what what remains- I could be all sorts of download stuff/ [homework?] could come off and be stored to CD or an external drive.
The best advice is to keep all valuable files off machine any way.
My machine which is a reasonably hefty desktop runs virtually empty of stored files.

Thanks everyone - when I visit him tomorrow we'll try all that. I'm not sure of the version of AVG (but I will check that) and I will make sure it's all the latest versions.
