Graphics Card for Dell Dimension 5100

  FGP 09:46 08 Jul 2008

I've got a 3.2 ghz p4 (2GB Ram) Dell and I want to get a decent graphics card so that i can play the odd decent game on it. I was looking at either the:

Radeon HD 3850 256MB or
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 512MB

they seem to be recommended on a few sites and the price of about £85-£100 is what i want to spend.

However, i've seen issues relating to my PSU, that suggests my computer might not be up to handling them. is that correct? Are there any issues a 'non gaming' pc like mine might have when getting a good graphics card that i don't know about?

any help would be much appreciated. Cheers

Three questions:-

1) Are you sure you have PCIe, and not AGP?

2) What make and spec. is your power supply (open case and have a look)?

3) What sort of grahics card do you have atm? It might be that the cards you list use a similar amount of juice to your current one.

I've definately got a PCI-e slot

The current psu is:

DEll Model: H30SP-00
AC input - (50-60hz) 100-120v ~ /9A
200-240v ~ / 4.5A
DC Output - +5v 22A, +3.3v - /17A
Max Power output: 305w

I don't know what else you might need to know from the case?

currently using a radeon X800 GTO (3 years old) - but having problems with it, which is whay i'm looking to upgrade.
