Got a new PC, need help with what things mean!

  shellbe 16:45 30 Sep 2005

bought a new pc a couple of days ago. I might know how to use a pc, but all the inner workings - haven't a clue!

I would like help knowing what certain things mean/do?

I was told my pc was a Pentium 4 640 HT. Where do I look on my pc to see that it is?

What does this all mean?:
320GHz 800MHz front side bus
2mb cache
1024 DDR Ram (what is ddr?)

Thanks for any help offered. :)

To see the spec of your processor right click My Computer and choose properties. It should be staed somewhere near the bottom.

For Front Side Bus click here

1024md ddr means you have 1024mb (or 1gb) of double data ram click here

Or altenatively, download Belarc from click here

this will give you all the information you need to know about your computer.

thanks for those links. On my computer, it says:

Pentium(R)4 CPU 3.20GHz 3.19GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM

So I'm guessing that it doesn't have HT? What is HT anyway?!

HT is Hyper Threading technology, just a fancy way that your processor works basically.

I downloaded that belarc tool, and am now scared!! Full of things I don't know about or recognise. Should I download something to stop spyware? I have norton, but I think that just does viruses.

Is it able to carry out the tasks you are able to do with the software you have.

If it is - Don't worry.

Unless you are an extremely avid gamer, most of us will not notice the difference.

The spec given sounds as though you will be able to use it happily for the next 3 to 4 years for all normal tasks, and longer for basic letters and pictures.
