Getting sounds on XP for an old game

Third attempt! I can now run Discworld on XP, but have to use text instead of sound. The sound system is Soundblaster Live! 5.1 through Creative Labs DTT2200 Desktop Theatre 5.1 speakers. Trying to use Discworld's "Setsound",I can choose to select and configure digital audio driver. Clicking on "Creative Labs Soundblaster or 100% compatible" and then " attempt to configure sound driver automatically" I appear to succeed, getting "Device detected successfully, select OK to save..." but clicking on OK gives "Error could not save configuration file".
None of this makes sense to me, and all I want to do is to play Discworld with sounds! Any suggestions gratefully tried. BRG.

If all else fails , try this. It works on XP and simulates DOS.
