getting NAS storage unit to work

I have recently bought a Buffalo LS220 ready populated NAS storage unit set to Raid 1. Having tried to follow the setup instructions I don't appear to be able to get it to work i.e. I cannot get it to load any files or folders on to the discs. In particular I have a number of folders on an external drive which I would like to place on the NAS unit

Should the drive be visible on my network? At present it is not. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get the unit up and working?

Did you install it as per these instructions? Have you installed the NAS Navigator and updated the firmware?
