formatting c drive operating xp

hard drive corrupt on laptop.can anyone help re how to re format c drive.Have tried through dos prompt but it will not allow me as ?xp is in operation.can anyone help? thanks

You would need to boot from the cd and change the boot order in the bios to cd first.

Normally laptops have a "recovery" CD to restore an image of the hard drive (OS and bundled software), so that it reverts to its out-of-the-box state.

If for some reason you do actually want to format the "C" drive, boot with a Windows 98 "boot floppy" and, if it is a FAT32 partition, run the command FORMAT C:

If it is an NTFS partition, from the "boot floppy", run FDISK to remove the "non-DOS" partition, repartition the drive and format as FAT32. The partition can subsequently be convertred from FAT32 to NTFS if necessary.
