what is the name of the update that will protect me against the sasser worm. I am going to reformat tomorrow and want to install this 1st before i go on the net to download the rest of the guff

NTFS is preferrable (assuming you've got XP).
After a reformat you'll have to reload the Windows updates from MS (unless you've got the Service pack CD) and, unfortunately, you could be hit by Sasser etc. during the download. It happened to me many times. I had to persevere and ignore the viruses for a while and after installing the updates I allowed my anti-virus to do its stuff.

Reading your message again I realise you want to do the sasser bit first and then the rest of the updates.
