Floppy Disk Problems

  [DELETED] 14:04 14 Dec 2003

Hi all

My sister has tried using a floppy disk which has all her university work on, but when she tries to open it its saying "The disk is not formatted or its formatted for a Macintosh" Strange considering we have a PC which she has saved it from, not a mac. Is there any way of formatting it to a PC type (FAT) without loosing 3 years of work.? Also is there anything that can be done to maybe convert it?

I don't know the answer but don't format it as it could make the problem worse.

Try it in another floppy drive.

Check it from an MSDOS window. At the command prompt type in CHKDSK A:

If you're running XP to get the command prompt click on Start / Run and type "cmd" (without quotation marks)

If there's a problem type in CHKDSK A: /F

Big Elf and Andy J

Thanks for the suggestions.

I typed that in the MSDOS wondow, and it came up with "The type of the file system is FAT." - so it isnt Mac?

It also said "Error reading folder /."

First things first. If you have three years work on this disc, write protect it now, if it's not already, then at least anything you do will not make the problem any worse.

At an A:\ prompt, if you type;

dir [enter]

what result do you get?

Or, can you not get to an A:\ prompt with that disc in?

used this floppy in another machine - perhaps at university?

Last chip

It just goes straight to C: documents, not A

FE, my sister says that this is the only PC that she has used the floppy on.

FE's comments rings a bell with me now. I had problems recognising a floppy when I'd used it in Win 2000 and then tried to read it in a Win95 system. It would only be read in a system with NT, 2000 or XP.

Sorry, hadn't refreshed before posting and didn't see your answer.

This program click here has the ability to recover files from a floppy.

You can download a trial version if you wish and see if it helps.
