Faster Broadband With The Same Connection?

I am currently using a 15kb/s capped modem which I got when I signed up to NTL. This is probably a dumb question, but if I were to buy a faster modem and attatch it in place of the old modem, would it work?

I know my modem can go faster, as NTL have done a weekend trial before giving users faster access. As my subscription is for 15kb/s would the new modem still go at that speed?
