extrenal USB2 drive crashes PC on startup

can anyone explain why my PC with windows XP crashes whenever I start it up with a USB2 "firelite" Smartdisk external drive connected? It works fine if I connect it after start-up.
There must be some conflict with the driver I guess, or with the BIOS.

Do you have updated drivers for it? And Windows XP sp1?

Other than that I would wonder about the powersupply - what is its rating?

Smartdisk say that no drovers are needed other than those already in Windows XP and I have installed SP1 and all other major updates. The power supply is connected, so I guess this has something to do with either a conflict on ports or something because t crashes as soon as the desktop is shown and it starts loading my utilities such as norton systemworks etc.
