external hdd reformatting

After using my external usb drive on my daughter's macbook it will not work on my PC. Does anyone know how to get it back Will I need to reformat it?

Sounds like the Mac has changed something on the drive file system to suit the Mac so now Windows is unable to read it

Why not copy all the files from the external drive to the MAC as a backup

then you could reformat the external drive on a Windows system

then try to save all the files back to the external from the MAC, there is a way to do this and force the MAC OS to save in a Windows compatible mode

For the exact method try posting on one of the many MAC forums out there

Following on from what TOSH has suggested, when you reformat the drive, I wonder whether it would be worthwhile creating two partitions - one for PC files and one for Mac?

I've no idea whether this would work, but it might be worth trying.

Thanks for the advice. The mac doesn't display any of the files I saved from the pc so I can't do your idea TOSH.. I use it to back up my PC files so no worries unless the PC loses its data before I've repaired the external HDD.

Just realised that windows no longer recognises the presence of the HDD when I plug it in, even though it works fine on the mac, so looks like I may have to buy a new one.
