External Hard Drive not working

  elliecat 10:14 11 Jul 2008

Hi we have a Toshiba external hard drive that does not seem to be working. We plugged it in yesterday and instead of the usual green light coming up it came up with a red one and is making whirring noises and not being recognised by any computer. Is there anything that we can do or is it now useless? We have all our music and films stored on it so would rather not consign it to the bin just yet.

red light means HDD is running this means that at least "mechanically" the drive is working.

Windows is trying to find the boot record on the drive, and failing.

Drive Rescue click here

may help you recover the boot record nd / or any files on the drive.

If you cannot recover the boot record but can recover files, once you have rsecued the files then try Disk mangement and reformat the drive to make it usable again.
