External hard drive not recognized

  charlton200 16:51 21 May 2010

My external hard drive was fine up to today. I plugged it in this morning and it has not been recognized. The usb port is working and the hard drive does switch on because the light is comes on and it make a noise, it just doesn't show up.

Any ideas please or is it finished?

Can you see it in Disc management?

Its possibe the file system on the drive is corrupted

try to run chkdisk on the drive.

Try running chkdsk Don't forget to use your external drive letter.

How do I run chkdsk when the drive letter for the external drive doesn't show up.
It usually come up as F drive but since today it doesn't come up at all. I have been to disc management but the only drive there are c drive and recovery drive.

I'd just like to add that the hard drive still makes that disconnection noise that is made when you don't use the safely remove hardware button, even though the hard drive is not recognized.

Are you sure the drive letter has not changed?

Can you prove the USB cable is not defunct?

  charlton200 07:31 22 May 2010

After the recent re-install I did, the letter did change, I think from F to H, but it still showed OK and worked: up to yesterday. I have tried my ipod in the usb and it works fine.

I meant the lead from the ext-HD to the USB port, not the socket on the PC.

My first ext-HD bought as a unit, suffered some mischief inside its fancy case.
Having proved the HD to be OK, I bought a new case.

I'm pushing the idea of a case or software fault rather than a dud HD, and can only offer the idea of proving the HD is OK first.

Use Drive clean up to remove USB device drive info from the registry
click here then reconnect the drive and see if Windows finds and installs new hardware.

Fruit Bat,
I tried your cure and it worked and all is well. When I was out this morning and no cure was in sight, I thought it must be the external hard drive it self: so I bought another one. I tried your cure before I unwrapped it and I'm glad I did because I will now be able to get my £45 refund: a big thanks to you for saving me some money and all of you who tried to help.

...Fruit Bat /\0/\ you use Drive Cleanup?
It seems no time since most on this forum recommended CCleaner.

You've found Drive Cleanup better or what please?
