External Hard drive not recognised

  TATHS 18:46 28 Sep 2008

I use two external drives as archive and back up, a Seagate 260GB and a Freecom 300GB
My Freecom suddenly has become unavailable because Windows "cannot find a driver for Cypress AT2LP RC42" Looking on the net shows a lot of such problems around Dec 2006 but I can find any solution listed other than A)Buying a new drive or B) Buying a new External Drive case and fitting the old drive into it.
The first would result in the loss of all data on the drive (- It should be backed up on the Seagatebut who knows if there has been a seperate malfunction?)
The secondbeg the question of would the new case acually work.
Does anyone know of a way to get the missing driver?

This may be of help to you, just ignore the one who says through it in the dustbin.

Could you remove hard drive from case and connect it internally to your pc and retrieve the data, this would also prove if case is faulty or the drive,if it is the case you could buy a new case.

Try it on another machine. Roll back the driver in case an update modified it.

seems a common fault with the cypress usb/ide control chip failing inside the enclosure
