external hard-drive fault

  noobtype 14:49 06 Nov 2007

My external hard-drive (iomega 360GB) is suddenly not recognising the file format of a lot of my vids, and those that do run stop after 10 minutes, freezing the pc. All vids work fine on the internal hard-drive. Is this fixable?

Refresh USB Ports
In device manager Uninstall EVERYTHING under the heading USB,
reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.

Repair XP by replacing corrupt files

sfc /scannow

in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer. This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.

I don't have the windows disks, there are emergency internal recovery disks (Packard Bell). Is it safe to run sfc with this?

Just run SFC it probably will not ask for the disk if the system came preinstalled.
