External hard drive

Hi, I've recently purchased a Maxtor basics 500GB external hard drive and very happy with the product so far, however, it doesn't sense when my PC is shut down in order to switch itself off and continues to run.

The drive will quite happily shut itself down when my PC hibernates though!?

Just the other night I after I had shut down my PC I decided to unplug the USB lead from the tower and the drive eventually switched off. I then reconnected the USB lead (to the already shut down PC) and the external drive came back to life! can anyone shed some light on this annoying matter?

Does it have a separate power supply?

Get an intelli socket that cuts power to all connected items when you turn off your system

Are your USB ports powered off when PC is powered off ?
Mine are not and external drives stay on until powered down.

Good Luck
