External DVD writer not recognised

  BingoBoy 22:09 12 Jul 2010

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 that runs Windows XP home SP3. I have been having problems trying to burn movies and pictures to DVDs.

I have attached an external DVD writer via a USB and this drive is designated the E: drive on My Computer. I can play pre-recorded DVDs through this player but I can't seem to get to view what I think I have burnt to a DVD. When I put the DVD in the machine the message states E:|is not accessible Incorrect function. The disc I used was a Philips DVD+RW straight out of the case and I used CDburnerXP to burn some jpeg photos to the disc (it does also do DVDs).

Am I missing something here - can anybody offer some help?

Have you tried uninstalling the DVD drive, rebooting and allowing XP to
reinstall it? Have you tried the DVD drive on a different port?

somthing else that might help.click here;EN-US;Q316529

Can you try the DVD in a different drive to see if it works in that?
What is the make and model of the external writer? Does it fully support DVD+ or does it prefer DVD-?

The DVD is a DVD dual double layer 1116UI. It shows RW DVD + rewritable on the front and also has click here for live update programme. I think it came from PC world.

I will try the automated troubleshooting services to see if that works.
