Extended active directory

Hi there,
I Have always wanted a little server based network to play around with, and I finally got a little spare cash around, so I found an old Windows Backoffice 4.5 small business server (With windows NT) and yanked an old computer out. I am going to upgrade the spec of the old computer and put the Back office 4.5 server onto it. I originally wanted it as a little home server to play around with basically, as I do not know much about server OSes (Hence why you are reading this post now!)

It struck me this morning, Is there a way to extend the active directory and server tools, e.t.c to work on the computers a few miles down the road at my office. Is there a way I can do this over the internet or something? (Bearing in mind I will be running Windows NT!)

Any advice on this matter will be most appreciated!
