Explore.exe using 60% CPU!

In the last 3 weeks, within a minute or 2 of opening any folder, the CPU usage for explorer.exe for my user name rockets to around 60% or so, and slows things to a crawl. I remember having this problem a year or so ago but cannot remember how I was advised to fix it. Terminating the process through Task Manager, and re starting it solves the problem.....until the next time I open a folder, and I'm back to square one again. I'd be eternally grateful for any words of wisdom as this is my first posting for help!

Thanks
