I have been given a project at work.

We are a small enegineering firm with computorised lathes, milling machines and drills. Currently we use laptops connected to the machines through parallel cables to upload and download the propgrames.

We want to network the programes and connect the machines direct to a networked PC.

So I need help on the software that will allow up to 12 machines to access the programs and how I get cable to connect the twekve machines to the PC?

And yes they will connect to a dongle on the back of the PC

Operating system? Types of laptops, USB connectors, budget...etc A few more details would be useful.

The main thought would be the budget available. Software packages would depend on the precise requirements needed. Would the software require inhouse or outhouse specialist involvement ie 'do you have a fully competant IT person available inhouse.

Once again you are right! So sorry!

operating system Win NT4, laptops to be replaced but connection will be parallel not usb and it it is 9 pin at PC and 25 at machines.

Budget/ who knows I am at the feasability stage but we rae haooy to spend £300.00 on each bit of software plus the cabling and labour at £30.00/hour

We have a couple of guys who are quite capable of looking after the software. One in particular looks after all the programming for the machines.

We want the software to do what a KVM switch will do?

For advice on cabling and switching try click here Netshop are pretty good and can manufacture all sorts of exotic cables to order.
Don't forget to measure up twice , finding a cables too short at the last moment is one huge PITA.
