Exchange 2000 Message Queue

  Steve N 17:08 25 Jul 2003

Random emails seem to be getting stuck in the SMTP message queue in exchange system manager. The problem doesn't affect just one user, but it doesn't affect all users at the same time. Emails just seem to get stuck intermittently. Help much appreciated.

Turn on SMTP protocol logging on the properties of the smtp virtual server
and set the format to Microsoft IIS Logfile format. The log is in
c:\winnt\system32\logfiles\smtpsvc. The log will tell the story.

If you right click on a "stuck" queue (one with a blue check) and hit
properties, what does it say at the bottom?

It says:

'Unable to bind to the destination server in DNS'

It is really quite strange because most of the emails in the domain actually reach there intended recipients it is just the odd one or two which doesn't.

Open the Exchange System Manager

Select Servers->(your server name)->SMTP
in the tree

Right click on Default SMTP Virtual Server, select properties
Select the Delivery tab, then Advanced
then "Configure external DNS servers: CONFIGURE"
And make sure it has the right DNS server(s).
