Excessive noise from computer

On power down, especially, a rather mechanical groaning noise is heard coming from my computer I suspect the cooling fan. Advice on replacing please!

First job is to pinpoint the problem problem area, take off the case side panel and use a cardboard tube as a stethoscope to identify the problem, there are a range of possible problems, CPU fan, Northbridge fan on the MOBO, Case fan. Having done that source a replacement from somebody like ebuyer or Novatech and swap it out.
Another possible problem fan is on the PSU, don't mess with that unless you know what you're doing, mucking around inside a Power Supply Unit can be dangerous.
It's also possible that the noise is coming from the hard drive, so back up your data in case it all goes pear shaped.

Yhanks for the info, I've taken the cover off and it seems the noise is coming from the fan on the chip. What is rhe best way to proceed, a new fan?

Yes before it fails completely and fries your cpu.
