excessive disk activity

hi, where should i start to look for the above, just put an old HDD into the laptop after spnding two days trying to get the other one to work, the green light is flashing all the time. so something must be writing to the disk, i think.............thank you

Right click toolbar, Task Manager, Processes tab. On the menu select View|Select columns. Tick I/O Reads and I/O Writes. Watch it for a while and see what is doing the reading and/or writing.

Also, have a look in My Computer at the free space on the drive - is it going down?

My old drive used to be like that, until I swapped for faster bigger drive. Bog standard are only 4200rpm that's your problem

Also something else I learnt on this forum: Use TweakUI to uncheck "optimise hard disk when idle". I spent years trying to stop strange disk activity and that was all it was.
