Excel/Word says file already open

  [DELETED] 19:54 03 Dec 2003

When I try to open a file in Word or Excel it tells me that the file is already in use when it isn't.

Word asks me if I wish to make a copy anmd Excel says that I must close the first file first or something like that.

Can anyone explain why please?

I have heard of this before - will you post the exact error message as I cannot find a reference to it at the moment.

A document with the name 'directdebits.xls' is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the documents are in different folders. To open the second document, either close the document that's currently open, or rename one of the documents.

if I open Word or Excel first and then open the document through File/Open/ etc it opens up fine in both programs. It's only when I go through Explorer or off the shortcut on my desktop.

Is there a similar suggestion for Word please?

For word, you will need to do a google search for the exact phrase - in inverted commas "...".
