Excel SUM doesn't add display values from formula?

I'm using Windows XP Pro and Office XP/Excel.
I'm trying to work on a timetabling scenario and but also want to keep a track of the total time (in minutes) allocated to each person.

I've used the following formula to try and link the cells showing when they're on or off to another set of cells relating to the time in minutes:-

=IF(C5=0,"0","90")
i.e. if the C5 cell shows them not working then 0 minutes are returned and if C5 shows them on duty for 90 minutes, then "90" is displayed.

However, when I try to use the SUM formula on these cells which display either 0 or 90 mins
it returns a value of 0. Is there a way around this problem so that the SUM function adds up the displayed figures? At the moment it appears to see only a conditional formula and is therefore ignoring it in the SUM calculation
Any help greatly appreciated!

=IF(C5=0,0,90)

(your formula gave text values which result in 0 if you sum them).

So how can I alter the formula to avoid this?
What do I need to do to make it work? I'm afraid I'm still a bit of a novice

=IF(C5=0,0,90)

As above. Remove the " marks.
