Excel - most recent date

I have a worksheet with Project names across the top and House Types down the left.
The grid contains only dates of when a house type was used in a project.
Is there a way to have a column at the end of the projects that will read back along the rows and return the most recent date in the row?
Is it then possible for the cell (or cells) containing that date to be highlighted?

The "MAX" function will give you the maximum in a range of upto 30 specified cells, which could all be in the same row. "DMAX" also does the same for a specified range within a single column.

You could then use conditional formatting to highlight the cell who's date is equal to the maximum that's been found.

Exactly what I wanted - thanks stlucia
