OK, make sure your cells are formatted as "Custom", and in the format Type put the code [hh]:mm:ss

The square barckets allows for times greater than 24 hours (which is what you can get if you sum them)

When you say "add"..."into"... excel.

Do you mean you want to add two durations together for example?

e.g. on a timesheet 1 hour 10 minutes 50 seconds
plus 2 hours 15 minutes 12 seconds?

Or just enter times as per daba's advice?

It isn't clear what you are trying to do from your post.

You must enter the colon, : between the sections. This tells Excel it's time you're dealing with. It's no good using a full stop, or comma, to seperate the sections.

You must use the square brackets as per daba's post, in the formatting for the cell where the total is... this tells Excel that the hours part you're referring to is a duration, not a time; For example, there is such a thing as a duration off 11 hours, and the "equivalent" time of 11 0'clock,... there is such a duration of 26 hours, but the "equivalent" time is 2 o'clock, not 26 o'clock

Hope this helps,

Couldn't have put it better myself....

I want to add two (sometimes three) lots of hours minutes and seconds together.

I am not really used to using excel, so please be gentle with me

If these are times entered as hh:mm:ss then it is straightforward e.g. with times in A1 and B1 then in C1 enter

and format the cell as daba suggested.
