excel formatting

in an excel worksheet with a column full of first names, does anyone know how to apply some formatting that will make excel display just the first letter of the name, without going through and modifying each and every entry?

Create a new column. Let's say your first names are in column A. In the new column enter


in Row 1 and copy the formula down.
