Email merge and dates

Hi - I'm using email merge from Word 2003, picking up the fields from an Excel 2003 spreadsheet. Everything is ok apart from the dates I'm trying to insert.

Instead of, say, 20 July, I'm getting the numerical equivalent. Is there any way of getting it to show as 20 July or is it something I'm going to have to do manually, which would be a bit of a bind, as the date in each email will be different.
