DVD writer installation

  MisterPaul 08:35 20 Jan 2005

Last night I tried to fit a new dvd writer for a mate. His pc is about 5 years old. I thought that I could just switch his slave writer and that the pc would install the new one on startup. I swapped them over, making sure that the jumpers at the back were the same. The pc booted up with an error, saying something about the 'ATAPI incompatible'.

Any advice?

But why does it do this? I thought writers were plug and play these days?

The writers are; the BIOS might need updating though. The problem is connected to the machine, not the hardware.

agreed, you mention the machine is 5 years old, long before writers were (around?) popular, a bios upgrade may sort it out. Another point may be that you are using a 40 wire ide cable when an 80 wire is preferred (or essential).

One more thing, my dvd drive simply won't work if it isn't the master on it's ide channel.

Food for thought....
