DVD rewriter NEC 3500

I have been on the lookout for a retail version of the above writer but am struggling.

It seems the norm now for NEC to issue drive only.

Can anyone advise?

Yes, I think you're right. I bought the LG DVD burner and had to buy Nero 6 separately. I got Nero from click here and scroll down.

Although retail versions are mentioned and Gladiator Computers claims to be stocking it, there only seem to be OEM offerings.

Scan of Bolton (click here) has the OEM version at £53 including VAT in choice of colour - you can always get a copy of Nero6 or similar and probably still save on the retail price.

As most CD/DVD-ROM drives and rewriters are rebadged models from specialist manufacturers such as Samsung, Plextor etc, the NEC may also prove to be so.

Might be worth checking out but, if you are prepared to consider Lite-On (usually rebadged models), it has a good name for value and quality.

I've had two TDK models - the first, a Vortex, was a rebadged Plextor and the second, my current CyClone, is based on a Samsung.

You can find out who rebadges what at click here

a review article on the 3500 launch quotes a spokeman from NEC saying a retail version will be available with all fittings and some Ahead products in the box.

However, here's some firmware notes that may be useful when you get one. click here

'NEC sells the ND-3500A to other OEM manufacturers, like TDK/HP/MadDog and few others...' TC.
